Krista Austin is a sport scientist currently serving as an industry consultant and performance specialist for professional and Olympic sport athletes. Austin has worked for the United States Olympic Committee, the English Institute of Sport, England’s Cricket team and multiple national governing bodies of sport including USA Wrestling, USA Taekwondo, USA Weightlifting and USA Triathlon. Her wide range of expertise includes consulting for professional sport teams on the use of intermittent hypoxic training, preparing athletes for the NFL combine, endurance coaching for distance runners and triathletes of all levels, and providing performance nutrition to multiple populations from elite athletes to diabetics.
Austin is best known for “Rebuilding Meb” Keflezighi, the 2009 NYC Marathon champion. She currently serves as a sport and medical consultant for Coala Life and is a member of the advisory board for Eat Rx. She has previously consulted for MindSpring Sport, Masimo, Generation UCAN, Michael Johnson Performance, Hypoxico, Ironman, and Hutchinson Technology. In addition, her recent work includes research on dietary supplement use in military populations, performing validation of occupational physical assessments for the U.S. Marine Corps ground combat elements and external review of the selection and assessment process for Marine Reconnaissance Training Company to support reductions in attrition and enhancement of student resiliency.
Austin recently authored a chapter on Injury Prevention and Recovery for the “The Women’s Guide to Training for Triathlon” and has also authored the book, “Performance Nutrition: Applying the Science of Nutrient Timing,” which approached nutrition from a performance perspective through the intentional use of food to optimize an aspect of human physiology. She frequently contributes to online media such as LAVA Magazine, and is regularly interviewed for training and nutritional advice by Sports Illustrated, Running Times, Runner’s World, Competitor, Inside Triathlon and Triathlete Magazine. As a member of the American College of Sports Medicine and National Strength & Conditioning Association, Austin regularly writes for accredited industry publications and serves as a referee for multiple scientific journals. Working as an associate editor, Austin contributed to the International Journal of Sports Nutrition and Exercise Metabolism.
Austin received her Bachelor of Art degree in Physical Education, Masters of Science in Exercise Physiology, and Ph.D in Movement Science. Additionally, Austin is a certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist. As a volunteer she supports military personnel in achieving improvements in medical and physical health and occupational performance.
